Jonas Beck
The White Werewolf
Beck in human form is very strong, agile, and superhuman in leaping, strength and has
lightening fast reflexes. He carries himself with a sense of nobility which is to be
expected with his pedigree of royalty.
He can see in hyper senses...red...hear hyper sense...sounds can scream at him from all
around but with concentration, he can filter them out. Most animals will calm around him,
sensing that Beck is their master.
He can transform part of his body at a time. When he grabs someone around the throat,
they are likely to see a massive hand of fur with incredible sharp talons sticking out.
Even in human form, part of his arm can be wolf like if needed for its strength.
When he transforms into the werewolf persona, he takes on more savage characteristics
although he still has traces of his humanity....but it is a constant struggle. His size
and strength are incredible as his leaping ability. His claws can slash through metal. His
fur glistens and hardens to spikes on its tips giving him an almost metallic look and
hardness. It also protects him somewhat.
As the story goes on, Beck will continue to exhibit more of his wolfen characteristics
as this world presses on his more primitive nature. Therefore he can only stay here for
short periods of time. the Royal amulet permits him to traverse the two realms and is
vitally important for him to return or else he will stay here and become more wolf than
man.
In the Underside, his father was legendary and although that might make Jonas subject
to an inferiority complex, it doesnt. He knows that he will have the chance to prove
himself and he must seize that opportunity. His whole life has been geared to recognizing
that chance and stepping up to it. At some time, the two different worlds will be pulled
into co-existence but he knows that he must find a way to cure the wolf lust before it can
happen.
Mercedes Guilliaune
"Caul"
Born in New Orleans with a caul (a piece of membrane that covers a
newborns head) which is said to give the child a special sensibility or precognitive
sensing ability. With Mercedes, that certainly is true. And that is how she picked up her
nickname of Caul because she was recognized early for her perception skills and it was
said to be because of the caul.
She has an uncanny perception of things and can "feel" danger, fear, etc. If
she lets herself go into what she calls the zone...can actually engage in telekinesis and
move things...send objects flying, but it gives her a severe headache and makes her
immensely tired when she pushes herself like that. She usually just allows the sensing to
come to her as she accepts that but when she actively engages in her abilities, it gives
her a sense of being something less than human and she doesnt like that feeling. She
can also force her will upon people, not exceptionally in a way that would cause them to
do something they ordinarily wouldnt but enough to push an indecisive person into a
particular direction.
Superbly trained in marital arts, she spends her time as a private investigator after
serving on the police force. But the police force was too structured and too limited and
involved far too many political games. She never wanted to obtain a rank higher than an
investigator but was forced to work around those who did and thus, she found the system a
bit muddled and unclear.
She has a razor like wit and is very sassy. But also has her soft side as she donates
quite a bit of her money to inner city arts programs. She thinks young children need to
see the world differently if they have hope for a future. She has her own wealth from the
family although she doesnt take advantage of it.
Relationship between Beck & Caul
Whereas Beck is the expert on the Underside and instructs Caul about the secret world,
Caul must lead Beck through the maze of humanity and explain how "Earth" works.
Beck has much to learn to fit in....cooked food, the use of forks and knives for eating,
the general attitudes of humans towards each other (in the Underside, things are much more
direct and hierarchical).
A relationship starts to develop between the two but it is something that they refuse
to acknowledge or accept.
PRIMARY SETTINGS
The mansion of Cauls father in Boston is a site for many magical artifacts and is
said to be built on the very foundation where fleeing witches left Salem to hide from the
witch hunters.
Beneath the mansion is an entrance way into the catacombs of Boston which serve as a
haven for the Underside members on earth. It is here that they can meet or hide. Snaking
under the city with exits into the subway and the waterways, the catacomb allows an
experienced person to navigate quickly through out much of the city.
Each city has its own special area where undersiders can find themselves. Usually
abandoned subway lines (Boston, New York) or old cities that have the new cities built on
top of them (such as Seattle and Minneapolis) or other tunneled structures (salt mines in
Detroit and Cleveland, iron mines in Pittsburgh). For some cities, the underground areas
are created by Undersiders...such as the Web Warrens in New Orleans. The main entranceway
in New Orleans is the new wave nightclub, The Red Spike.
New Orleans is where Caul was born and where she returned to after a stint of living in
New York. to most of the Undersiders, New Orleans is the closet thing that they have to a
home. The citys ancient magical existence gives them comfort and the aspects of
voodoo and archaic rituals allows them to blend in better than anywhere else.
